This chapter presents a map of Ursa Minor and Draco. This map contains the North Celestial Pole and the whole of Ursa Minor and Draco, with parts of Cepheus, Camelopardalis, Ursa Major, Hercules and Bootes. Ursa Minor conjures up the impression of a dim and distorted Ursa Major. Polaris is a luminous star, 6,000 times as powerful as the Sun and 680 light-years away. Draco is a long, winding constellation. The most prominent part is the Dragon’s head near Vega. The head is made up of Gamma; Beta; Xi and Nu, which is a very wide double with components which are virtually equal at magnitude 4.9, and are easily separable with binoculars. They make up a physically-associated system, but the real distance between them is at least 290,000 kilometres (180,000 miles); both components are white, and of type A.
