ABSTRACT

The CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) was originally operating using the facilities of the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases of the Ministry of Health when they first came to work in Kenya. That was 1980 when KEMRI was just beginning. And so the CDC fell under my direction within KEMRI and the DVBD, because as you will recall, I was the Director of the DVBD. In part this was because I had the facilities they required since they were doing laboratory and field-based studies then, focusing mainly on malaria studies. Yes, you will see it on record, so I laid the ground rules right from the beginning with CDC. Harrison Spencer was the very first officer and I liked working with him. He passed on recently under unfortunate circumstances.
