ABSTRACT

There’s an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. However, you need to be careful, because a bad picture is worth a thousand bad words. A relevant, well-placed, well-presented figure can help you to explain a point and can add a huge amount of additional information that would be virtually impossible to include as text. For example, a map can show the location of a site or the global distribution of a phenomenon that could take hundreds or thousands of words to describe, and a photograph can enable a reader to appreciate a scene in more detail than you would easily be able to provide in words.
