ABSTRACT

Smart card technology is only fairly that smart card-based applications have gained momentum and their adoption has become feasible. The transport sector plays a central role in the smart card micro-world, and for this reason a significant amount of the relevant research has been oriented towards the implementation of smart card applications in transport operations. The public transport operator of Thessaloniki buses is taking under consideration the option of introducing smart cards for e-ticketing. Greek municipalities are also discussing smart cards as a cost efficient alternative to coin/token payment of parking services on and off road. The prime mover of smart cards has traditionally been the telecommunications industry, which very early realised the potential of and adopted the new technology. Smart cards are also used in a wide range of other sectors' applications.
