ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at strategies that permit individuals to use what power they have attained or to create the perception they are powerful individuals. In an environment of interdependence such as higher education, the creation and use of power to accomplish one’s goals is of great importance. Unlike other resources like time and money, power as a resource is not quantifiable, meaning there is no fixed amount of power which once consumed is gone. As a tactic or power play, delaying can be used in a few different ways. The most common delaying tactics are: making someone wait for readers, postponing a decision, creating a task force or study group, and placement of items on an agenda. Language can create perceptions of the speaker, giving him/her power over his/her audience. The literature is replete with articles and books on delegation, mentorship, empowerment, however, it is rare to see these terms connected to power or politics.
