ABSTRACT

Apolitical campaign sign can be anything from a billboard to a handout taped to a wall. In my campaign, we used four kinds of signs: (1) bus bench signs, (2) signs to be displayed in store windows, (3) literature used as door hangers, and (4) bumper stickers. These were adequate for a state representative race. We began by buying the bus bench signs six months before the election. That gave us enough time to secure the best locations. Prices are the same regardless of the location, and I got a package deal of ten signs for $3,000, including the cost of the artwork and production; however, prices change and vary from city to city. Candidates are usually asked to pay up front, so having money in your bank account is important. It is also important to check out the election laws, because you may have to include your party affiliation and a disclaimer (i.e., paid political ad) on the signs.
