ABSTRACT

To reduce Europe’s dependency on Russian gas, the European Union has decided to construct the Southern Gas Corridor to transport Caspian Gas from Azerbaijan to Europe. The Southern Gas Corridor is composed by three pipelines: the South Caucasus Pipeline eXtension, the Trans ANAtolian Pipeline, and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline. We have constructed six microtunnel sections over 400 meters’ length for a total of 3630 meters of microtunnel between 2015 and 2018 on this project leaded by major Oil&Gas Companies. Indeed, the microtunneling technology presents several advantages over other construction technologies to allow installation of pipeline on the most challenging sections of the projects with minimal disturbance and maximal efficiency. Microtunneling provides a reliable, eco-friendly and competitive technology for challenging geological crossings. However, construction of microtunnel for pipeline installation presents certain specificities to be considered to lead to the success of the operation.
