ABSTRACT
Dilshad was the only surviving son of a rich-peasant Sheikh in Jhakri Two brothers had died in infancy; several sisters had survived. Of Dilshad’s two elder sisters, the older died in childbirth in the mid-1960s. The second, Gulistan, was married to her sister’s widower. Dilshad’s three younger sisters were all married after Dilshad. Dilshad’s land would remain intact, but the entitlements of his four sisters might strain his resources. Indeed, this was a central issue in the troubled relationship of Dilshad and his wife, Dilruba. If Dilshad felt he was giving his sisters their due, Dilruba felt she was fighting a rearguard action against in-laws intent on depriving her children of their inheritance. That Dilruba voiced her resentments did not aid her cause, however. Indeed, her married life was peppered with acrimonious squabbling and marital violence—and Dilshad divorced her in spring 1991.
