ABSTRACT
It was Victor Hugo who pronounced Balzac’s funeral oration at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris on 21 August 1850. The theme of Balzac the unconscious revolutionary became a landmark in Balzac criticism but it was not original to Hugo, having been aired in several Fourierist and left-wing papers (including Hugo’s own L’Événement) earlier that year.
