ABSTRACT

As the parent of both a teen and a preteen, I ®nd myself worrying daily about the opportunities my daughters have for getting themselves into trouble as a result of the media resources they use. My worries over media violence are just the beginning. The sheer volume of information that must be managed exceeds by leagues what was only imaginable ten years ago. Clearly, humans come insuf®ciently equipped to process the bandwidth of information in which they have begun to immerse themselves ± a fact which was prophetically chronicled by science ®ction writer Greg Bear in Darwin's Radio, who characterized the next stage of human evolution as the capacity for modulating two information streams simultaneously.
