ABSTRACT

The design process is very much a journey, and engaging in it can be seen as embarking on an exploration. In this regard the old proverb that says the longest journey begins with the first steps holds a good deal of truth. This chapter is about taking those first steps. Whether the reason for the exercise is user-inspired, business-oriented, or just plain born of personal passion, there is always a vision. It's helpful to engage in these first steps with a completely open mind. In the beginning of the project almost anything goes. Ideas that may seem radically divergent can lead to unexpected solutions. There are many techniques for brainstorming and different schools of thought on how to make the exercise truly effective. Every project begins with a series of thoughts and visions or feelings. Large organizations and design groups are reflective of their creative employees and vice versa.
