ABSTRACT
The short excerpt from Lulofs’ novel describes the transformation of the Indonesian landscape through the creation of rubber plantations. Other products were planted on a large scale in other parts of the world. Crops such as coffee not only shaped agricultural economies by linking them to global networks but also reconfigured landscapes and the environment, as we see in this photograph of a Colombian coffee plantation.
