Visual Source: “Perry’s Ship”

This 1861 Japanese woodcut shows a modern steam clipper of the sort that Commodore Perry would have used to force Japan into signing an unequal treaty with the United States in 1854. European ships had dominated ocean trade routes since the sixteenth century, but with the industrial revolution, new technologies to power ships were invented that enabled faster travel that was less dependent on winds and ocean currents.
