ABSTRACT

Although wallpaper had been printed in Britain since the 1500s, it was not until its mass production in the nineteenth century that it began to be found in middle-and working-class houses as well as in the homes of the aristocracy. By the late nineteenth century, manufacturers were commonly printing commemorative wallpapers to celebrate special events. This wallpaper, celebrating Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, uses exotic images of the empire to demonstrate the power of the Queen. It would probably have been used in hotels and inns rather than in private homes.
