ABSTRACT
Muslim responses to domestic violence have been explored in recent years by numerous scholars. The significance of Qurʾan verse 4:34, exegesis, and the status of hadiths are often raised as factors in the perpetration of violence against domestic partners. This chapter focuses on the efforts by the Sufi organization Sout Ilaahi to educate the public in Singapore about the problem of domestic violence. The leaders of Sout Ilaahi move beyond the paradigm of textual arguments to articulate a vision of Islam that reflects the Prophet’s kindness, good manners, and gentle spirit. The importance of therapeutic support, safehouses, and education is also part of their campaign to raise awareness about domestic violence and offer a path for both victims and their families to move forward with the aid of a support system. Sout Ilaahi’s program, called #VoiceOut, is an example of Sufi activism that engages with the Islamic tradition while recognizing the need to engage professionals, government agencies, and the larger community.
