Theinhalationofvolatilesubstancesforrecreationalpurposes('gluesniffmg', solventabuse,volatilesubstanceabuse(VSA))isnotanewphenomenon.Many earlyanaesthetics(diethylether,chloroform,nitrousoxide)wereftrstinhaled deliberatelytoexperiencepleasurablesensationssuchasdisinhibitionandeuphoria Nowadays,solventsfromadhesives(notablytoluene),typewritercorrectingfluids andthinners(usually1,1,1-trichloroethane),'butane'gasandpainrelieving(PR) spraysandotheraerosolsarepopular(Flanaganetal.,1990)althougharangeof otherproductsmayalsobeencountered(Table16.1).
