ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the importance of training within Britain during the wartime period. Two major events brought into focus the reality of the situation and highlighted the need to take urgent action with regards to wartime production. The first of these was Dunkirk in which a withdrawal by the British Expeditionary Force resulted in a major loss of war equipment through abandonment and destruction on the Continent of Europe. The second event was 'The Battle of Britain'. Throughout the wartime period management consulting was generally classified as a 'Reserved Occupation'. Generally throughout the War, a large portion of the work of consultants was centred on the engineering and manufacturing sectors that had been regeared to take account of the needs for wartime production. The period of the Second World War was significant for management consultancy because it demonstrated its usefulness to wider audiences in a range of settings that had previously not attracted consultant input.
