ABSTRACT

The way it spozed to be? There are two papers in this volume – ‘The way it spozed to be?’ and ‘Do schools have a future?’ – which may be attributed in part to my own biography but equally to the work of educational heretics, conscientious dissenters and non-conformists. As a prelude to those two papers it is important to establish my own credentials as a heretic and to describe the shaping of my beliefs. The origins of my disaffection are owed primarily to my miseducation as a pupil at the High School of Glasgow in the 1950s and the obliviousness of my fellow pupils to the dire nature of the experiences to which they were subject. It was, for them, simply ‘the way it spozed to be’.
