ABSTRACT
This chapter identifies what is a website, and explains why an event should use one. A website is a collection of related web pages, and so it can be viewed akin to a single document. Web communication is essentially a means of promoting a message online, which can either be purely informational, such as this event is happening when and where, or persuasive as to why people should attend. Event websites can be used as a one-way monologue, simply trying to get across their message. Typically, this is evidence of a transactionary marketing approach. Website design encompasses a wide range of activities for creating and managing a website, including the code, graphics, authoring and evaluation. Web architecture is how people structure, organise and present their content. It is driven by their users' needs. Apps can be created for a wide range of event-related functions, such as streamlining registration, encouraging networking between delegates and providing real-time voting and updates.
