ABSTRACT
A crisis was now approaching. After considering various alternatives, Lord Gort was forced to the conclusion that the possibility of a compulsory withdrawal of the B.E.F. from the Continent must be faced, and so his Chief of the General Staff, Lieut-General H. R Pownall, telephoned to the Director of Military Operations and Plans at the War Office and discussed this possibility.1
