ABSTRACT

It was an honour to participate in the conference on the Clandestine Cold War in Asia and I was particularly delighted to have this opportunity to join in a discussion on the intelligence aspects of the Malayan Emergency, since the operational successes of the security forces and the bravery and effectiveness of the civilians, officials and others have been widely recognised but the contribution made by those involved in intelligence work has tended for the usual reasons to be less well known. Anthony Short has suggested: 'other things being equal the key to counter insurgency in Malaya was Intelligence' but this point is seldom acknowledged publicly.
