ABSTRACT

The great Psalms Scroll from Qumran Cave 11 (Sanders 1965, 1967) designated as 11Q Psa or 11Q5 contains all or part of over forty canonical psalms (from Psalms 101 to 150) as well as eight additional works-four known previously, and four “new” works. The four known previously are Psalms 151, 154, and 155, as well as Sirach 51:13-19, 30. The Psalms, known from the Syriac biblical tradition, reflect Palestinian Hebrew sources, and so it is not entirely surprising to find the Hebrew originals at Qumran. The four “new” works are entitled the “Plea for Deliverance,” “Apostrophe to Zion,” “Hymn to the Creator,” and a prose summary of David’s compositions (García Martínez 1994:304-9; Vermes 1995:238-43). The script in which the manuscript is written suggests a date in the first century CE, though of course the original composition (of which this manuscript was a copy) may have been much older.
