ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of gender role ideology on women's experiences of balancing work and family life in South Korea. It explores the influence of Confucian culture on women's experiences of the unequal sharing of domestic work and care work between men and women within the Korean family. The chapter explores the women's experiences of balancing work and care and how they perceive the gender division of labor in the Korean family. Korea has achieved rapid economic development following the industrialization era of the 1960s. Gender role ideology is conceptualized as "a set of attitudes about the appropriate roles, rights, and responsibilities of men and women in a given society". The Korean government established the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF) in 2000 to improve gender equality and to achieve gender mainstreaming in policy and society.
