ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to present a current picture of women in Australia in relation to their participation in the labour force, the roles they typically fill, their educational achievements and their entrepreneurial activities. Where possible a picture is presented which is inclusive of Indigenous Australian women, however, the majority of the statistics that are readily available skew the picture to reflect what is the reality for non-Indigenous women in Australia, as the Indigenous population are a minority in their own country. Hence, statistics combining “all Australian women” make any differentiation between Indigenous women and non-Indigenous women difficult. The following report illustrates this phenomenon well.
