ABSTRACT

By paying close attention to the interrelations between local knowledge and Western modernity, this chapter examines the relationship between sport and gender politics using three main case studies. Having outlined a general theoretical position, the chapter begins with a historical account of the ways in which women in Taiwan have engaged with sport. There follows a brief biographical study of Cheng Chi, arguably Taiwan’s greatest female athlete. Finally, the chapter turns to the contemporary engagement of women in Taiwan with the health and fitness industry.
