ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the transformation of work and labor in global capitalism in the global North and South. Globalization has been accompanied by liberalization, digitalization, and marketization. The formation of global value chains (GVCs) has strengthened the integrated production and market system, connecting the global North and South. Reconfiguration of production on a global scale has been taking place with rising mobility of capital, labor, and commodities. Globalization has generated different forms of precarious work across countries and varied impacts of the labor market in the global economy. The development of technology has also profoundly affected the nature of work and the labor process, shifting power relations. Emphasizing the difference between the global North and South, this chapter explores the changing features of work in global capitalism.
