ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the usage of verbs in Russian, words for various sports in Russian, and the difference between the Soviet Union and Russia. It reviews vowels next to each other in a Russian word. Russians used to celebrate Christmas in a similar way to other Christians, but the Bolsheviks, who came to power in 1917, were against religion and destroyed a lot of churches and cathedrals. Thus, for 70 years most Russians did not celebrate Christmas, and the focus of winter festivities was shifted to the New Year. There are two palatalised consonants in some words, and endings of words in Russian are very important. A lot of Russian words referring to people can have female versions. Most of the Russian names for sports sound very much like those in English. There are a couple of exceptions though, with chess being one of them.
