ABSTRACT

Managers are servants. Their master is the institution they manage, and their first responsibility must therefore be to it. Their first task is to make the institution, whether business, hospital, school or university, perform the function and make the contribution for the sake of which it exists. The person who uses a position at the head of a major institution to become a public figure and to take leadership with respect to social problems, while the company or university erodes through neglect, is not a statesman. He or she is irresponsible and false to a trust.
