ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors present and evaluate the effectiveness of a range of group management and facilitation methods. It is intended to give the teachers choice in how they work with a group of learners. The methods teachers choose to employ should take into account the individual and group needs of their learners. If time is short and the group is large the teachers may wish to introduce themselves and then invite the learners to introduce them to two other people in the room. With a new group the teachers may wish to find out more about their learners at the start of the class. Small group teaching sessions are fundamentally defined by the intention to enable learners to participate actively in the class and there are a number of class formats that tutors will recognize. Short quizzes or mini-tests can provide very useful feedback to tutor and learners about learning gains and knowledge gaps.
