ABSTRACT
At the heart of Van Arsdale's achievements in providing a vast array of benefits for his members was his love for the rank and file: the ordinary people. He agreed with Lincoln: "Common-looking people are the best in the world: that is the reason the Lord makes so many of them." 1 Van Arsdale could not do enough for them. It was his calling, his mission, the reason he worked practically round the clock.
