ABSTRACT

There are many facets to supervising in organisations and, for clarity, this chapter is divided into four sections. The ®rst section considers the de®ning issues in supervision when it takes place in organisations. It presents a global view of the underlying factors which any supervisor contemplating working in an organisation should be considering and expecting to meet. The second section examines what the organisation expects both from the supervisee and from the supervisor. It demonstrates that for the organisation, supervision can become a problematic activity. The third section looks at organisational ponderables, such as the impact on the supervisory activity of the way the organisation functions and how, if at all, the supervisor can address the problems which arise from this. The fourth section is speci®c to supervision taking place in group settings. In such settings the supervisor has to navigate the psychodynamic challenge arising from both individual and group unconscious processes.
