ABSTRACT
Children who have had to be vigilant for domestic or political violence will not easily pay attention to the book on their desk or their teacher’s voice. A child from a critical home may doubt ever getting things right. Competition for adult attention or negative judgements about behaviour and achievements can reinforce parental messages about some perceived flaw in the child, and criticism can feel more painful than a teacher might think.
