ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses disability activism worldwide through case studies investigating social media use by disability rights activists in the US and Serbia, as well as the social media training initiative for the African Youth with Disabilities Network. The power of social media for activism comes down to several aspects, the ease of sharing information through posting links and pictures and thoughts and the ease of having that same information sent to the networks of many other people. Most American disability rights organizations use social media to steer people across the Internet to their activities and advocate for civil rights for disabled people. In Serbia, one of its main disability rights organization, the Novi Sad-based Centre Living Upright was founded in an effort to get personal attendant services to disabled people who needed them. In 2013, Centre Living Upright joined with the Novi Sad Journalism School to participate in a program that strengthened their social media skills for disability activism.
