ABSTRACT

The project carried out in the 1990s to develop a missiology of Western culture originated out of The Gospel and Our Culture Programme. The Gospel and Our Culture Programme was set to end in July 1992 following the national consultation. The missiology of the past 100 years was geared to small-scale traditional non-Western societies. Perforce, a missiology seeking to address modern Western culture must be quite different. Yet the old and new missiologies would share important characteristics. The project had three main goals. First, that 'a defined field of mission studies and training that address modern western culture from a missional point of view' be developed. The second goal was to sponsor publications. Third, the work groups would convene consultative groups 'to do specialized study as well as consultations and seminars to be conducted on a national or regional basis where the results of the project can be reported and shared with interested scholars'.
