ABSTRACT

A concise overview of the literature on wrist splints is presented in this chapter. Wrist splints are primarily

considered to be a form of medical treatment to relieve symptoms or improve functionality. For example,

wrist splints are commonly prescribed in the conservative treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Splints are sometimes also utilized by workers as personal protective equipment, similar to the use of

back belts, though their efficacy in this role is yet to be demonstrated. Both aspects of wrist splint use

are discussed in this chapter. A related chapter in this book, “Engineering controls: wrist and arm

supports,” describes other methods by which wrists, and more generally the upper extremity, may be

effectively supported while working.
