ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance on writing up research. In particular, it focuses on styles of writing, on how to reference correctly and to use referencing as a means of enhancing the academic rigour of a dissertation or thesis, and on the need to inject a critical perspective. The chapter also provides some hints and tips on how to go about writing up and how to overcome common challenges. It provides students with the opportunity to explain why particular approaches and methods have been chosen, for in any academic research it is necessary justify why one or more methods have been selected in preference to others. The chapter enables students to explain how they did their research – that is, to reveal the extent of their research skills and expertise – and, provides them with the opportunity to reveal more generally their knowledge and understanding of research approaches and philosophies.
