This chapter examines the spaces children engage with – home, school and the digital world – and the stories that emerge when these are used as stimulus. The sharing of story is consistent across time, cultures and communities. Through stories, people share experiences, knowledge, values and beliefs important in their world. Storytelling is a powerful tool for communication, collaboration and creativity that not only enables participation within society, but that also builds literacy competency. The traditional storyteller relates their tale using voice, sound and silence, movement, gesture and stillness and even images or props. Traditional storytelling offers single, unique performances, but with the creation and capture of stories using technology, a story can be replayed and revisited for a range of purposes and audiences. Storytelling is essential for literacy learning progression. Children's enthusiasm to participate with multimodal text creation presents opportunities to engage them in literacy learning as they create, share and view stories.
