Description William Wyndham Grenville, Lord Grenville, was Foreign Secretary in June 1795, and a
target for accusations of over-cautiousness and incompetence. He stands on a
hearth-rug, back to a blazing fire, while he reads a book entitled ‘Fundamental
Principles of Government for 1795’, which he is too near-sighted to be able to read.
On his wall hangs a ‘Map of British Victories on the Continent’ which is a mass of
confused doodles.
