Description Gillray portrays William Windham MP, one of the foremost opponents of the Peace of
Amiens, which would bring a welcome interlude to the war between Britain and France.
In Parliament he condemned the terms by which peace had been negotiated, forecast a
resumption of hostilities, and lamented the inadequacies of British defences against
invasion. The nightmares depicted here are related to those fears.
