ABSTRACT

Performance-avoidance goals are one of two types of performance goals. Performance-avoidance goals are generally considered the most maladaptive among the goal types. This entry summarises the definition of performance-avoidance goals and the difference between performance-avoidance and performance-approach goals. The current conceptualisation of these goals as well as the directions for future examination are considered. Last, an example of a performance-avoidance goal is provided.
