ABSTRACT
This entry reviews the definition of achievement goals, and the two main types of achievement goals: mastery and performance. The achievement goal literature has been fraught with controversy over how to define these goals, and definitions are still evolving. Examples of achievement goals in action are provided. Then, historical contributors and conceptualisations are reviewed. Finally, educational implications associated with goal types are considered.
