ABSTRACT

Chronic health conditions (CHCs) are increasing in the U.S. workforce and are associated with complex challenges for workers and their employing organisations. Workers with chronic health conditions may experience declining work ability, conflicts between work and health-management activities, difficulties with symptoms at work, and concerns about work discrimination. Organisations can help by having formal policies in place to accommodate workers with CHCs and allowing supervisors to have flexibility in implementing such policies, training supervisors on communicating about CHCs and supporting workers with CHCs, implementing job control and flexibility for all workers, and implementing supportive programmes to help workers with CHCs navigate challenges and promote work ability.
