ABSTRACT

Maintenance bilingual education is an approach of educating students in two languages with the goal of achieving proficiency in both languages. This article will define the term before describing the factors that influenced the creation of early maintenance bilingual education programmes. The paper will explain how maintenance bilingual education programmes have emerged in their present form. The next section will provide a description of the classroom practices involved in this model. Finally, the article will delineate the benefits and criticisms of this programme model.
