ABSTRACT
Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is a legal term used in US government documents to refer to individuals who are not fully fluent in the English language. This article will describe the circumstances surrounding when Limited English Proficiency was first introduced into the Civil Rights Act of 1975. It will then provide an overview of the challenges that individuals with LEP face in the medical field. Then a summary of how LEP impacts schooling practices will offer a snapshot of the struggles that LEP students face in the classroom. Finally, the entry gives an overview of how LEP influences adults who are trying to perform basic everyday tasks.
