ABSTRACT
This chapter evaluates a framework of social change and its application to the LGBTQ movement and group. We discuss examples of dramatic social changes, such as the Stonewall Riots and the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the implications of those movements for the community. We take a Western perspective in discussing incremental social changes such as the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the removal of homosexuality from the DSM. We provide evidence to support that cultural acceptance of the community leads to further structural and policy changes for this group. Additionally, we cover social theories that consider the role of allyship and how identifying as an ally can further improve public opinion of LGBTQ individuals. The distinctions between different members of the group is highlighted, and the needs associated with transgender individuals is further discussed to determine that more change is needed for a further shift in structural policy.
