ABSTRACT
Jouarre and Chelles were among the most important foundations for religious women created in the Frankish kingdoms under the influence of the Irish missionary Columbanus (c. 615). Both were conceived as double monasteries headed by an abbess, but the monks’ houses subsequently were converted into communities of canons.
