ABSTRACT
Defences of women as responses to the prevailing discourse of misogyny were a pan-European phenomenon in the Christian Middle Ages. This entry surveys the arguments adduced in the profeminine cause, the rhetorical moves employed by authors, some of whom participated in both sides of the debate, and compares male and female contributions to this genre, focusing on Christine de Pizan.
