ABSTRACT
How people write is rapidly changing. New digital writing systems and tools provide multiple for options for creating text and teaching writing. The following five issues that are likely to influence writing and the teaching of writing in the digital age are examined: schools are slow to adopt new writing technologies, existing writing tools do not disappear when new writing tools are created, new writing tools provide affordances as well as challenges, students will still need writing instruction and practice, and the definition of writing is in flux.
