ABSTRACT
Contemporary school-based interventions are critical for supporting children’s academic and psychosocial well-being. This entry provides a brief history of school-based interventions and describes contemporary models of prevention and intervention, specifically multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). MTSS models are multi-level service delivery frameworks that provide supportive interventions to all students in accordance with their level of need. This entry describes the nature of universal (Tier 1), targeted (Tier 2), and indicated (Tier 3) interventions and reviews empirical evidence of their effectiveness. This entry also describes studies of comprehensive MTSS implementation and concludes with directions for future research.
