About Us

A Message from the General Editor 

Routledge Resources Online – Medieval Studies comprises material taken from fourteen volumes of the ’Routledge Encyclopedias of the Middle Ages’ series published between 1993 and 2006. Several hundreds of entries from these volumes have been revised and updated with the current literature, which has substantially expanded the existing entries. In addition to these revisions, brand new entries have been added to reflect the changes in the field since 2006.

The resource covers the following key themes:

• Power
• Religion
• Cultures and Sciences
• Environment, Production and Exchange
• Gender, Families, Communities and Individuals
• Writing History, Methodology

Leading medievalists and specialists around the world took part in the project as section editors and authors. The resource aims to have a major impact on the present and coming generations of historians by offering a sophisticated new tool. I consider this an exciting and important mission and hope you find these articles both inspiring and useful. 

About the General Editor
Hannele Klemettilä is Associate Professor of Cultural History at the University of Turku, Finland. She earned her PhD in Medieval History from the University of Leiden, the Netherlands. She has been designing and teaching online courses for the Finnish Virtual University of History (FVUH) for over a decade. Her publications include monographs, books and articles relating to her fields of expertise, among others, on the professional executioners, Gilles de Rais, attitudes to cruelty, medieval kitchen, cultural history of wild berries, hunting, and attitudes to animals.
